Prof. M. C. Pant (MD, FICS, FAMS, FICR, D.Sc.) was a renowned Radiation Oncologist, widely recognized for his role in promoting the cause of cancer control and prevention. Graduated in medicine and obtained M.D. in Radiology (Radio Diagnosis and Radiotherapy) from the King George’s Medical College, Lucknow, now upgraded to King George’s Medical University. He joined the King George’s Medical University and became the Professor & Head in 1997. He received Advanced training in CT Scan from the Tokyo University and M.R.I. Training from Stenburg, Germany and subsequently specialized in Radiation oncology and received training in that speciality from U.I.C.C., Geneva, Cancer Institute Long Beach University of California, M.D. Anderson Cancer Institute, U.S.A. and the Rush University, U.S.A.
Prof. Pant had been the reciepeint of more than 24 awards and Fellowships in India and abroad, including the B.C. Roy National Award-2005, Hukum Chand Jain Memorial Award-2003, P.K. Haldar Memorial Award-1990 in Radiation Oncology, Dr. Birbal Shahni Award-2008 for his book on Cancer in Hindi language, UICC Fellowship & International Congress of Radiation Oncology Fellowship. He was also awarded D.Sc. (Hon. Causa) by the Kumaun University, Uttrakhand in 2008. In recognition of his outstanding contribution and services rendered to the society, Prof. Pant was conferred the Award of Padam Shri in the field of Medicine by the Government of India in the year 2008.
During 1993-2010, Prof. Pant got established 10 Cancer Detection Centres in Uttarakhand as a part of Cancer Control Programme. He has been running a unique project of Cancer Education through schools in more than 26 districts of Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, covering about 297 science teachers and about 60 thousand students so far. He had delivered a large number of public lectures on prevention of Cancer, held Cancer Detection Camps and exhibitions in various parts of India towards spreading awareness about the prevention of Cancer. His contribution in this regard has been well recognized at national as well as international level.
As an institution builder, Prof. Pant has been actively associated and involved in planning and development of various cancer care centers in India especially in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand States, namely, Swami Ram Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Institute, Dr. Sushila Tiwari Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Institute and Lucknow Cancer Institute. The Government of Uttar Pradesh appointed him as the Director of the Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences Lucknow, a super specialty post-graduate academic Institution during 2010-13. As a part of his socio-medical activities, Dr. Pant led a medical relief team of 15 doctors sent to serve the disaster sufferers of Kedarnath & Badrinath in June 2013, which was the first medical relief team reaching there. At present, Dr. Pant is the Vice-chancellor of newly created Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Uttarakhand Medical University, India.
As a well known academician, Prof. Pant had so far participated and delivered lectures in about 32 international and 60 National Conferences. The widely read and reputed magazine India Today, in its special edition brought out on completion of its 20 years, included Prof. Pant’s name among the 20 great personalities of the country who have rendered illustrious services to the humanity.
He had published more than 100 scientific papers in various International and National scientific Journals and had authored 10 books and booklets on Cancer Education, in both English and Hindi languages and guided more than 60 post graduate & Ph.D. dissertations on various subjects of medicine and Radiation Oncology, has organized more than 10 national level conferences and workshops, edited a number of scientific journals and Bulletins relating to Cancer and holds the membership of 14 International National Scientific Societies and organizations.
The area of research was in the field of preventive Oncology, relating to identification of predictive Bio markers and Genes in tobacco related cancers through which it would be possible in future to identify the individuals, prone and susceptible to this disease.
